Advocacy & Support
The greater weight-management support system
For additional support, information, and resources—including tools to advocate for improved access to care—visit the websites of these leading organizations in obesity care and advocacy.
The mission of the Obesity Action Coalition (OAC) is to elevate and empower people living with obesity through education, advocacy, and support. The organization strives to create a society where:
- All people are treated with respect—without discrimination or bias—regardless of their size or weight
- People living with obesity have the right to access safe and effective treatment options
- All people understand that when it comes to health, Your Weight Matters
The OAC also has a collection of resources to help you advocate for access to obesity care, including sample letters to write to your employer and sample letters to write to your insurance company to advocate for broader access to AOMs.
The American Diabetes Association provides tools and resources for those living with diabetes or at risk for diabetes. The chronic disease of obesity is a key risk factor for diabetes, so we work to improve individual health and access to care for both diabetes and obesity. To learn more, visit diabetes.org/obesity.
The Obesity Medicine Association (OMA) stands as the largest organization composed of physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and healthcare providers dedicated to enhancing the well-being of individuals impacted by obesity. OMA members are clinical experts in the field of obesity medicine, employing a comprehensive, scientific, and personalized approach to address this condition and help patients to achieve their health and weight objectives.
OMA supports advocacy initiatives at both national and state levels to increase access to and coverage of obesity treatment services for individuals affected by obesity. OMA is part of the Obesity Care Continuum and the Obesity Care Advocacy Network. They also hold a seat in the American Medical Association (AMA) House of Delegates and organize a biannual Obesity Caucus at AMA meetings.
Locate a healthcare provider in your area, find resources to advocate for coverage and learn about OMA’s Obesity Pillars, the open access journal of the organization.
